Welcome to Year 4!

This year, we have an exciting new curriculum that we know the children will love. Take a look at our long term plan to find out more.

We are beginning the year by learning about the Roman Empire in History. On the 24th September, we are taking the children on a trip to Chester where they will enjoy a range of ‘hands on’ activities in the city that is filled with Roman history.

We are also very excited to be getting the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument. Tameside Music Service will be giving weekly tuition on the art of playing Djembe drums. This tuition will continue throughout the year (alternate terms for each class).

We would like to stress the importance of reading regularly at home. We suggest that the children read/are heard read at home for around 20 minutes and at least five times a week. Reading regularly really makes a difference to children’s progress throughout the curriculum.

At the end of the year, all Year 4 children are required to sit a statutory times tables test. The children will be expected to know times tables up to 12. They should be able to quickly recall facts, including division facts. It is important that they practise regularly in order to develop fluency and improve speed of fact recall.

Things you need to know:

  • Our PE lessons will take place on a Tuesday and a Friday. Children will need to come to school in their PE kit on these days. There will be no need for them to change back into uniform on these days. Mr Grantham is running an after school sports club on a Friday.  Please sign up online if your child wishes to attend.
  • Homework will be given on a Friday and is due in on a Wednesday. Homework will consist of handwriting, spelling practice, reading/reading tasks and arithmetic.  Spellings will be handed out on Friday for children to practise ready for their Spelling Test the following Friday.

If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher via email or get in touch by phone through the School Office.

We are looking forward to a great and hopefully more normal year!
